A super simple pumpkin-embellished beanie that is ready for Fall!
This pattern was so much fun to design! When Hobbii Yarns asked me to participate in their Hobbii Junior challenge and design something for kids/babies for the Fall season, I was immediately down because these kinds of designs are my thing! :)
And when I thought of Fall, of course my brain went to pumpkins! So here we have it: a super cute, super simple pumpkin-inspired beanie in three different sizes! I hope these preemie and newborn patterns inspire you to crochet some for a NICU or nonprofit charity near you!
Thank you so much to Hobbii Yarns for providing the yarn for this project! The Acacia yarn I chose is a DK cotton/acrylic blend, and is SO soft and brings amazing stitch definition. It’s also OEKO-TEX certified, which makes it even more perfect for crocheting for delicate-skinned NICU babies! You can get some Hobbii Acacia here: https://hobbii.mvk.co/23n53
They ship worldwide!
These beanies are perfect for beginner crocheters, because the hat is worked in a flat rectangle and then cinched into a hat shape. To make the stem, you get a little practice with crocheting in the round. And to make the corkscrew ”curly”, as I like to call it, you make a simple chain and put multiple single crochets in each stitch to make it curl right up. Super simple!
I've written this pattern in 2 preemie sizes and a newborn size. I didn't have enough yardage to work up a toddler size (and since these are intended for the NICU, a toddler size isn't super necessary), but if you'd like to make one for a toddler, simply increase the number of base chains until the base chain measures the length of your toddler's head!
Hope you enjoy this pattern, happy crocheting!

Row 2: 1 Hdc in the 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3-31: 1 Hdc in each St across. Ch 1, turn.

Round 1: 6 Sc in 2nd Ch from hook. Place a stitch marker into the 1st Sc to mark the beginning of the round.
Rounds 2-6: 1 Sc in each St around. Move up stitch marker.
Slip stitch into the next stitch. Tie off, leaving a 10'' tail for assembly.
Curly:
With Hunter Green yarn, Ch 20. 3 Sc in the 2nd Ch from hook and in each St across. Tie off, leaving a 10'' tail for assembly.
Hat Assembly: Fold the rectangle in half, wrong sides facing. Using a simple whip-stitch, sew the two ends together. You should now have a tube. Tie a knot and the edge of the hat to secure the row of whip stitches. Now we will cinch the hat together. With your needle and yarn at one end of the tube, weave your needle in and out stitches around this edge of the tube. When you reach your starting point, pull your yarn tightly to cinch. Tie a couple secure knots and weave in ends.
Pumpkin Assembly: Using the stem yarn tail and a tapestry needle, use whip stitches to attach the stem to the top of the beanie. Using the curly's yarn tail and a tapestry needle, use a few secure whip stitches to attach the curly directly adjacent to the stem at the top of the hat. Tie off and weave in all ends.
