A twist on the classic ribbed headband, with the textured daisy stitch!
Crochet headbands make the cutest gifts! I've been making a bunch to donate to Lucile Packard's NICU at Stanford, to be gifted to babies as they are discharged :)
The Daisy Stitch is just a tad difficult to learn at first, but the texture is well worth it! If you aren't familiar with the Star Stitch, it may be helpful to watch this quick tutorial by Hopeful Honey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNKW7fSwBSc
And if you like the daisy stitch, be sure to check out my pattern for the Daisy Stitch Preemie Beanie! This pattern is worked flat across in turned rounds, then sewn together at the end to create the twist-front.
Here's the original pattern:
Materials:
- Size G crochet hook
- 1 skein baby* yarn (I used Bernat Baby Sport)
*Worsted weight yarn will work as well, as long as it's soft enough. If you do use worsted weight yarn, your gauge and finished hat size will be a bit larger, but that's totally fine!
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Finished Size: 13'' circumference
(This can easily be adjusted with the number of base stitches. See pattern for more details.)
Notes:
- Sl St = slip stitch
- Sc = single crochet
- Ch = chain
- Yo = yarn over
- St = stitch
- FHDC – Foundation Half Double Crochet
SPECIAL STITCHES:
Foundation Half Double Crochet: allows you to work both your base chain and first row of Half Double Crochets in one row!
Ch 2, yarn over and insert hook into 2nd ch from hook. Yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through the 1st loop on the hook (this creates the chain you will work into for the next stitch). Yo and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. You've just made your first FDHC!
Now work your next FHDC in the base chain you just created in the previous stitch. *Yo, insert hook into the bottom ch, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 1st loop on the hook, yo and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.* Repeat ** until you reach your desired # of FHDC stitches.
Row 1: FHDC 57 (or any multiple of 2, plus 5 stitches to reach your desired length!)
Row 2: [ *Insert hook into 1st st, yo, pull up a loop* Repeat in the next 4 st. (You should now have a total of 6 loops on your hook). Yo and pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1, forming the "eye" of this first daisy.
Now we will make the second daisy stitch. Insert hook into the eye of the daisy stitch you just made. Yo, pull up a loop. Insert hook into the last loop of the daisy stitch you just made. Yo, pull up a loop. Insert hook into the last st worked in of previous daisy st. Yo, pull up a loop. Insert hook into the next st, yo, pull up a loop. Insert hook into the next st, yo, pull up a loop. Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to create the eye of the 2nd daisy stitch. ]
Repeat the steps between the [ ] across until you reach the end of the row. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: 2 sc in the "eye" of each daisy across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 4-5: Repeat rows 2 and 3.
Rows 6-7: Repeat rows 2 and 3.
Row 8-9: Sl St loosely in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Sl St loosely in each st across. Tie off, leaving a 12'' tail.
Sewing the headband together:
Lay the headband flat, with the right side facing up. Pinch the top and the bottom of both the short ends to themselves (forming two C-shapes with the ends, wrong side facing out), and interlock the two Cs.
Sew the tail end with a whip stitch, in an S shape around the edges. Sewing the top two edges together first, then the third to the second, and then the fourth to the third. Tie off and weave in ends. Flip headband right side out.
