The cutest textured beanie for the little ones!
I've seen beanies like this for adults, and wanted to write a preemie spinoff because the little ones deserve cute puff hats too! Say goodbye to boring beanies with this cute textured puff stitch hat! You can embellish it with a simple pom like the little one up front, but the puff stitches can hold their own if you decide to leave it plain.
Although the puff stitches require a bit more yarn and time than a simple crocheted hat, the final product is totally worth the little extra effort. Try your best to keep the puff stitches voluminous, but close together at the same time - this will help avoid making a holey beanie!
Here we go!
Materials:
- Size G crochet hook
- 1 skein baby* yarn (I used Bernat Baby Sport)
*Worsted weight yarn will work as well, as long as it's soft enough. If you do use worsted weight yarn, your gauge and finished hat size will be a bit larger, but that's totally fine! The NICU needs hats in newborn and larger sizes as well.
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Notes:
- Ch = chain
- Sl St = slip stich
- Hdc = half double crochet
- Sc = single crochet
* This pattern is worked in noncontinuous, non-turned rounds. At the end of each round, you will join the round by slip stitching to the top of the first stitch.
SIZE: LARGE PREEMIE • 4'' tall, 10'' circumference • for a 4-5 pound baby
Puff Stitch (Puff St): *Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop* repeat ** 5 times, Yarn over, pull through all loops on hook, Ch 1.
Round 1: Ch 4, 6 Puff St in 4th Ch from hook, Sl St to top of 1st puff stitch to join round.
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 Puff St in each space* around, Sl St to top of 1st puff stitch to join round.
*"space" = the space between 2 puff stitches
Round 3: Ch 2, *2 Puff St in first space, 1 Puff St in next space*
Repeat from * to * around. Sl St to top of 1st puff stitch to join round.
Round 4: Ch 2, *2 Puff St in first space, 1 Puff St in next 5 spaces*
Repeat from * to * around. Sl St to top of 1st puff stitch to join round.
Round 5-9: Ch 2, 1 Puff St in each st around. Sl St to top of 1st puff stitch to join round.
