A super simple pattern for a cactus-inspired coaster!
During quarantine, I've been drinking from mugs a lot more, and discovered the need for coasters! If you've been following my page, I LOVE cacti (check out my free patterns for the Preemie Rose Cactus Beanie and Newborn Rose Cactus Beanie!). So when designing a coaster pattern, of course it had to be cactus-inspired.
This pattern is super simple and perfect for beginners who want to start crocheting in the round. Just a simple circle, embellished with a flower and embroidered prickles! I've also added a sturdy border around the coaster using the Reverse Single Crochet - instead of crocheting in the next stitch to the left, you crochet "backwards", into the stitch to the right.
Hope you have as much fun with this pattern and these coasters as I did! :)
Materials:
1 Skein Green Yarn
1 Skein Pink Yarn
1 Skein White Yarn
(I used a mix of Red Heart Super Saver and Big Twist Value)
Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Sl St = slip stitch
RSc = reverse single crochet
*Insert hook in the first stitch to the right, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * around, working from left to right.
Notes:
This pattern is worked in continuous rounds - do not join with a slip stitch at the end of each round.
Finished size: about 4.5 inches in diameter.
Coaster:
Using green yarn:
Round 1: Ch 2, 6 Sc in 2nd Ch from hook
Round 2: 2 Sc in each stitch around
Round 3: *2 Sc in first stitch, 1 Sc in next stitch* Repeat from * to * around.
Round 4: *2 Sc in first stitch, 1 Sc in next 2 stitches* Repeat from * to * around.
Round 5: *2 Sc in first stitch, 1 Sc in next 3 stitches* Repeat from * to * around.
Round 6: *2 Sc in first stitch, 1 Sc in next 4 stitches* Repeat from * to * around.
Round 7: *2 Sc in first stitch, 1 Sc in next 5 stitches* Repeat from * to * around.
Round 8: *2 Sc in first stitch, 1 Sc in next 6 stitches* Repeat from * to * around.
Round 9: RSc in each stitch around. Tie off and weave in ends.
Flower:
Using pink yarn:
Ch 3, 2 Dc in 3rd Ch from hook. (This 3rd Ch from hook will become the "center" of the flower). Ch 2, Sl St into the Center. Your first petal is made.
*Ch 2, 2 Dc into the Center, Ch 2, Sl St into the Center* Repeat form * to * two times more for a total of four petals.
Tie off, leaving a 6" tail for assembly.
Assembly:
Using the 6" yarn tail, sew the flower onto the edge of the coaster. I like to attach the flower at the last RSc, because this helps cover up the little bump that forms at the end of the round.
Using white yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider little "v's" on the body of the coaster as desired.
